To the BGSU faculty: BGSU-FA still planning to bargain after passage of SB5

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

Dear fellow faculty member at BGSU,

Or should we say “Dear fellow manager”? When Governor John Kasich signed Senate Bill 5 into law on March 31, he declared all of us to be management … a decision that would make us ineligible even for the reduced collective bargaining rights offered in a post-SB5 Ohio.
So what happens now? Does the BGSU Faculty Association disband? Do we hang a “for rent” sign on our downtown office and start using our letterhead as scrap paper?
Not by a long shot. Collective bargaining will proceed as usual at BGSU, and we continue to prepare for it, but with renewed vigor. Later this month, you will receive a survey that is the product of the dozens of volunteers on our six bargaining research committees, and your response to that survey will provide the last large piece of research we need before going head-to-head with the administration team: your priorities for the first contract.
Here’s why we’re confident that bargaining will proceed as planned:

HOW DOES BGSU STACK UP (Part 1)? Ohio’s Universities Compared

Friday, March 18th, 2011

At the end of this posting are links for comparisons of Ohio’s public-funded universities. Comparisons cover salary, retirement contribution, health care contribution, and several other areas of inquiry. There are three groupings of comparisons, including this message and two others. The comparisons are based on figures, provided by the American Association of University Professors, that were current as of March 16, 2011. We invite you to draw your own conclusions about faculty working conditions at BGSU.
